Delhi’s current Chief Secretary, Naresh Kumar, completed his tenure today (August 31). Senior IAS officer Dharmendra will replace him as the new Chief Secretary of Delhi. Dharmendra, who is currently serving as the Chief Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh, will take over his new role in Delhi on September 1.

A day earlier, it was reported that Dharmendra would be the new Chief Secretary of Delhi. The central government officially confirmed his appointment on Saturday.

Who is IAS Dharmendra?

Dharmendra is an IAS officer from the 1989 batch of the All India Administrative Service. He is currently serving as the Chief Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh. About two and a half years ago, when Naresh Kumar was appointed as the Chief Secretary of Delhi, Dharmendra was also considered for the position. However, he was sent to Arunachal Pradesh at that time.

Dharmendra holds a B.Tech degree in Civil Engineering. Before becoming the Chief Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh, he served as the Chairperson of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC). He has also worked in various positions within the Delhi government. In April 2022, he was appointed as the Chief Secretary of Arunachal Pradesh by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Naresh Kumar, who received two extensions as Delhi’s Chief Secretary, did not get a third extension. With his tenure ending today, Dharmendra will take over the position. Dharmendra’s appointment as Delhi’s Chief Secretary comes at a crucial time, as the Delhi Assembly elections are just five months away, making his role significant.
