After nearly two years of ethnic violence in Manipur, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned on February 9, 2025. He submitted his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal. Now, the big question is—who will be the next CM of Manipur?

Several leaders are being considered for the position. The top contenders are:

  • Thongam Biswajit Singh
  • Yumnam Khemchand Singh
  • Thokchom Satyabrata Singh
  • Thounaojam Basant Kumar Singh
  • Govindas Konthoujam

Among them, Yumnam Khemchand Singh and Thokchom Satyabrata Singh are the strongest candidates for the CM post.

Who is Yumnam Khemchand Singh?

  • Yumnam Khemchand Singh is a senior BJP leader in Manipur.
  • He won the Singjamei constituency in both 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections.
  • He served as the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly (2017–2022).
  • Currently, he is the Minister of Municipal Administration, Housing & Urban Development (MAHUD) and Education in the Manipur Cabinet.

Who is Thokchom Satyabrata Singh?

  • Thokchom Satyabrata Singh is another BJP leader from Manipur.
  • He won from the Yaiskul constituency in 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections.
  • He is the current Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
  • He has also served as the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, Law & Legislative Affairs, and Labour & Employment.

Why Did N. Biren Singh Resign?

The opposition was planning to bring a no-confidence motion against N. Biren Singh. However, after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President J.P. Nadda, he decided to step down. He will continue as CM until a new leader is selected.

Now, all eyes are on the BJP’s decision for the next Chief Minister of Manipur.
