Violence in Bangladesh continues to escalate, especially after a recent coup. Hindu communities and other minorities are being targeted by opposition groups. Attacks are not only on people but also on their homes and religious sites. In response, India’s Home Minister Amit Shah has announced the formation of a special committee to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of Hindus and other minority communities.

Government Action for Safety

In light of the ongoing violence, Amit Shah shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that the Modi government has set up a committee to keep a close watch on the current situation along the India-Bangladesh border (IBB). This committee will work closely with Bangladeshi officials to protect the minority communities, including Hindus, in Bangladesh.

Committee Details

The committee will be led by the ADG (Additional Director General) of the Eastern Command of the Border Security Force (BSF). Other members will include the IG (Inspector General) of the BSF Frontier Headquarters in South Bengal and Tripura, along with planning and development members from the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI).

This committee will maintain regular communication with Bangladeshi counterparts to ensure the safety of Indian citizens and minority communities in Bangladesh.

International Response

The United Nations has also expressed concern over the attacks on minority communities in Bangladesh. The spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General stated that the UN opposes any violence or attacks based on ethnicity or religion. The violence that erupted after Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure from the country has led to the destruction of temples, homes, and businesses, with Hindu leaders associated with the Awami League being killed.
