The conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has caused a severe humanitarian crisis, with the death toll nearing 40,000. In response to this situation, the United States has approved a $20 billion weapons package for Israel. This approval came directly from President Joe Biden. However, it will take several years for these weapons to actually reach Israel.
This deal was made as President Biden pushed for a ceasefire after 10 months of fighting between Israel and Hamas. The U.S. State Department announced that the deal includes 50 F-15 fighter jets worth $18.82 billion. Israel will also receive approximately 33,000 tank shells, 50,000 explosive mortar rounds, and new military cargo vehicles.
US Commitment to Israeli Security
The State Department’s notice about the F-15s stated that the U.S. is committed to Israel’s security. Helping Israel develop and maintain strong self-defense capabilities is important for U.S. national interests. The delivery of the F-15 aircraft is expected to start in 2029 and will include upgrades to radar and secure communication equipment.
Human rights groups and some left-leaning members of President Biden’s Democratic Party have asked the administration to stop or delay the sale of weapons to Israel. Congress still has the power to block the sale, but this process can be challenging.
Israeli Airstrike Kills 93 People
On Saturday, rescue workers in Hamas-controlled areas reported that an Israeli airstrike on a school housing displaced Palestinians killed 93 people. Israel claimed it targeted active militants. Biden administration officials have expressed concern about the civilian casualties. In total, at least 39,929 people have been killed in the Israeli military response in Gaza.
