You might have seen someone talking to themselves at some point. This might make you wonder if they are sick or acting strangely. While talking to yourself isn’t necessarily a sign of a mental illness, if it becomes a frequent habit, it could be a cause for concern.

Why Do People Talk to Themselves?

Psychologists say that people often talk to themselves when they can’t express their feelings openly. It’s a way of working through thoughts or emotions. Talking to yourself isn’t a disease, but if it becomes excessive, it might affect your mental health. Consulting a psychologist can be helpful.

Dr. Rajeev Mehta from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital explains that talking to oneself can occur in various situations:

  1. Normal Behavior: It can happen when someone is planning something, deep in thought, or very tired.
  2. Stress and Worry: People who are stressed, anxious, or worried might talk to themselves.
  3. Mental Health Conditions: In cases of psychosis or schizophrenia, people might talk to themselves in a way that seems like they’re talking to an unseen entity. They might talk to the air, gesture with their hands, or show other unusual behaviors.

Dr. Mehta adds that people who are perfectionists or are under a lot of stress might also talk to themselves. For those with schizophrenia, this behavior is more pronounced and shouldn’t be ignored. If talking to oneself starts affecting personal relationships or professional life, it is important to seek medical advice.

In summary, while talking to yourself occasionally is normal, if it becomes a frequent habit and impacts your life, consulting a mental health professional is a good idea.
