MP Wins ‘Soybean State’ Title Again, Tops Other States

Madhya Pradesh has regained the title of ‘Soybean State’ by surpassing Maharashtra and Rajasthan in soybean production. According to the latest data from the Indian government, Madhya Pradesh produced 5.47 million tons of soybean, making it the top producer in the country.

Production Details:

  • Madhya Pradesh: 5.47 million tons (41.92% of the country’s total production)
  • Maharashtra: 5.23 million tons (40.01% of the country’s total production)
  • Rajasthan: 1.17 million tons (8.96% of the country’s total production)

Recent Trends:

Madhya Pradesh lost its top position in soybean production over the past two years. In 2022-23, Maharashtra led with 5.47 million tons, while Madhya Pradesh was second with 5.39 million tons. In 2021-22, Maharashtra had 6.20 million tons and Madhya Pradesh had 4.61 million tons.

In 2020-21, Madhya Pradesh was the top producer with 5.15 million tons, while Maharashtra was second. In that year, Madhya Pradesh contributed 45.05% to the national soybean production.

Area and Production Increase:

In 2023-24, the area for soybean cultivation in Madhya Pradesh increased by 1.7% from 5,975 thousand hectares to 6,679 thousand hectares. This expansion led to an increase in production from 6,332 thousand metric tons in 2022-23 to 6,675 thousand metric tons in 2023-24.

Historical Fluctuations:

Soybean production and area have fluctuated over the years. For example, in 2019-20, the area increased by 14.30% compared to 2018-19, but production decreased by 33.62% during the same period.
