Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has talked about his retirement ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against India, which will be held in November-December. Starc said he will announce his retirement when he feels he can no longer give 100% to cricket. He also compared the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to the Ashes series.
Starc has played 89 Test matches and taken 358 wickets, including 14 five-wicket hauls. He is currently the fourth-highest wicket-taker for Australia in Tests. Starc compared the level of competition in the Border-Gavaskar series to the Ashes series.
Starc’s Views on the Border-Gavaskar Series
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Starc said, “The competition is on par with the Ashes, which is extended to five Test matches. The history of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy is not as long as the Ashes, but the level of competition between the two trophies is similar. We are currently at the top of the World Test Championship points table, so there will be extra spice in this series.”
Starc’s Retirement Thoughts
At 34, Starc is nearing the end of his career and is eagerly looking forward to the Border-Gavaskar series. He has struggled with injuries recently and acknowledged that he has played despite not being 100% fit. However, he does not think his career will be as long as England’s James Anderson, who continues to play well into his 40s.
Starc said, “I’ve been lucky to play all three formats for a long time. I don’t know how long it will last. Fitting into the schedule of all three formats is quite tough. Test cricket is still definitely my top priority. I’m not like Jimmy, who can play until 40 and has incredible skills to swing the ball both ways. I’ve never been that kind of bowler. I’m really looking forward to the Border-Gavaskar series. I haven’t set a specific retirement date yet.”
Starc’s Record Against India
Starc has played 18 Test matches against India and has taken 48 wickets. He has not yet achieved a five-wicket haul in a single innings against India.
