Joy Alukkas, the chairman of the Joyalukkas Group, which runs India’s largest jewelry chain, is well-known in the country. He is listed among the 50 richest people in India today, but there was a time when he faced humiliation. He recently shared this story in an interview with CNBC-TV18.
Salesman at Rolls-Royce Showroom Disrespected Him
Alukkas recalled an incident from the year 2000, when owning a Rolls-Royce was a symbol of wealth in India, and only a few businessmen had one. While he was in Dubai, he visited a Rolls-Royce showroom to look at cars. A salesman there asked what he wanted, and when Alukkas expressed his interest in seeing a Rolls-Royce, the salesman sarcastically suggested that he should visit a Mitsubishi showroom if he wanted to buy a car. The salesman didn’t know that Alukkas was a leading jewelry businessman from India.
How He Took Revenge
Feeling disrespected, Alukkas decided to buy a Rolls-Royce. Realizing he didn’t need such a luxurious car, he chose to gift it to the winner of his jewelry group’s annual raffle draw in the UAE.
Included in India’s Top 50 Rich List
Joy Alukkas, now 67, is among India’s top 50 richest people with a net worth of around $4.4 billion. He has a collection of luxury cars, and in March 2024, he bought a Rolls-Royce Cullinan worth ₹6 crore.
