Before the IPL 2025 season, a mega auction is likely to take place. Recently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL Governing Council held a meeting with the IPL franchises in Mumbai. During the meeting, most franchises expressed a preference for a mini auction.
Now, the possibility of a mega auction is being discussed. An announcement about it is expected by the end of this month. The IPL 2024 had a mini auction, which lasted for one day.
In that auction, Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc received a record-breaking bid. Kolkata Knight Riders bought Starc for ₹24.75 crore. If a mega auction happens before IPL 2025, franchises will need to build new squads. The auction could last for two days.
Before the IPL 2022 mega auction, franchises were allowed to retain four players. For the IPL 2025 mega auction, it is possible that franchises may be allowed to retain six players. There may also be a Right to Match (RTM) option. In 2022, the salary cap was ₹90 crore. This time, it could increase to ₹120 crore.
Reports suggest that the BCCI might announce the IPL 2025 retention rules at the end of August. This will clarify how many players each franchise can retain.
