In the 2023 Asian Games, India and Afghanistan qualified directly for the quarter-finals. India defeated Nepal by 23 runs in the first quarter final match. Meanwhile, Afghanistan qualified for the next stage by defeating Sri Lanka by eight runs.
In the first semi-final match, India beat Bangladesh by nine wickets, scoring 97 runs in just 9.2 overs. On the same day, Afghanistan defeated Pakistan by four wickets, chasing their target of 116 runs.
Afghanistan did not get a chance to face India in the 2023 Asia Cup as they failed to reach the Super Four stage.

India and Afghanistan have met only four times in the T20I format so far. Also, Afghanistan have not won a single match against India in the T20I format. The teams met for the first time in May 2010 at Gros Islet. India won the game by seven wickets with 31 balls left.
In the second match, they locked horns in September 2019 in Colombo, Sri Lanka. India once again beat Afghanistan by 23 runs.
