Himachal Pradesh, known for its tourism, relies on the tourism sector for about 9% of its GDP. The Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) operates 55 hotels to cater to tourists. However, a concerning situation has emerged: 35 of these hotels are running at a loss, while only 20 are profitable. This means over 63% of HPTDC’s hotels are in deficit.
Increase in Loss-Making Hotels
Earlier, 56% of HPTDC’s hotels were reporting losses. This figure has now risen by 7%. As a result, the employees of the tourism development corporation are facing delays in their monthly salaries.

Details of the Losses
During the Himachal Pradesh Assembly’s monsoon session, it was revealed that 35 out of the 55 HPTDC hotels are operating at a loss. This information was shared in response to a question by opposition member Sukhram Chaudhary. On Tuesday, the state government provided details on which hotels are making profits and which are not. The tourism department is overseen by the Chief Minister, while Raghubir Singh Bali, a cabinet-ranked official, is responsible for the tourism corporation.
Recent Increase in Loss-Making Hotels
In February, during the budget session, Sukhram Chaudhary had raised the issue. At that time, the state government reported that 31 out of 55 hotels were running at a loss. Only 24 hotels were profitable. Now, six months later, the number of loss-making hotels has increased. Currently, only 20 HPTDC hotels are profitable, while 35 are experiencing losses.
