Customers hoping for relief from high mobile tariffs might be disappointed. In response to suggestions from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), telecom companies have stated that there is no need for standalone SMS or call packs. They believe that the current tariff plans meet various customer needs adequately.
TRAI’s Consultation Paper Last Month
This response came after TRAI released a consultation paper last month. TRAI suggested that telecom companies should offer plans with only voice and SMS services, without data. TRAI asked companies to submit suggestions by August 16 and counter-suggestions by August 23.
Airtel’s View on Bundled Packs
Airtel, the second-largest telecom company, responded by saying that current plans are simple and easy to understand. Airtel pointed out that older customers prefer all-inclusive bundles that include voice, data, and SMS. These bundles simplify managing multiple plans and have no hidden charges.
Jio’s Perspective on Affordability
Jio, the largest telecom company, referred to a survey in its response. According to Jio, 91% of mobile users find current telecom tariffs affordable, and 93% believe there are enough options available in the market.
VI’s Concern About Digital Divide
Vodafone-Idea (VI), the third major private telecom company, argued that launching only voice or SMS packs would increase the digital divide. They believe such packs could discourage users from upgrading and experiencing digital services.
TRAI’s Argument
TRAI’s consultation paper highlighted that most available tariffs come in bundles including data, voice, SMS, and OTT services. TRAI noted that these bundles do not meet the needs of all subscribers, as some do not use all the services and end up paying for unused ones.
