Coonoor bus accident : At least nine people were killed and several injured in coonoor bus accident a tourist bus carrying 55 passengers plunged into a ravine near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on Saturday evening. The bus was on its way from Ooty to Mettupalayam when the incident took place.
DIG Coimbatore Zone Saravana Sundar had earlier said, “About eight people were killed and some were seriously injured. Further investigations are on.”
According to the police, four women and a minor boy were among the dead. The accident victims were from Kadayam in Tenkasi district and were on their way home.
The bus fell into a ravine when the driver of the vehicle lost control. Locals, officials from the police station and the fire and rescue rushed to the aid of the victims and rescued the injured.
When the bus overturned due to the accident, rescue workers were seen climbing down from the bus using ropes and reaching out to the passengers.
All the injured have been taken to the Coonoor Government Hospital for treatment and a rescue operation is currently underway. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin expressed grief over the victims and announced financial assistance to the families of the deceased. He expressed concern about the accident and condolences to the families of the victims. The CM announced that Rs 2,000 will be given to the family of the deceased and Rs 1,000 to those who suffered serious injuries.
In a statement, he said that 50,000 rupees will be given to those with minor injuries. He directed special treatment to the wounded. The CM also said he has appointed Tourism Minister K Ramachandran to oversee rescue and relief operations.
