Political parties in Bihar are gearing up for next year’s assembly elections. The campaign season has started with rallies and padyatras (foot marches). In this context, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav has begun his gratitude tour, focusing on reservation and caste census issues.
Tejashwi Yadav is leveraging these topics in his speeches to target the NDA (National Democratic Alliance). He argues that the NDA lacks the courage to openly discuss reservation and caste census. He questions why the BJP goes to court on these issues if Nitish Kumar is genuinely supportive of them.

In Bihar politics, the caste factor is very important. This is why the BJP, which opposes caste census elsewhere, remains silent on the issue in Bihar.
RJD has always used the caste factor effectively. Lalu Prasad Yadav won elections using the Yadav-Muslim formula, and now his son Tejashwi is focusing on reservation and caste census to gain support.
In 2015, RJD benefited from reservation policies. This time, with the caste census added to their strategy, they hope to outmaneuver their opponents.
While NDA leaders claim Tejashwi’s tour will have little impact, their concerns are evident in their statements. BJP’s state president and Minister of Revenue and Land Reforms, Dr. Dilip Jayaswal, sarcastically suggested that Tejashwi should first go on a repentance tour. He noted that Tejashwi has returned from abroad and now remembers Bihar.
