Bharuch: About 2,000 people have been shifted to relief camps after the Narmada river flooded low-lying villages in Gujarat’s Bharuch district on Sunday afternoon.

In addition, about 500 cattle were taken to shelters, officials said. According to district administration officials, the water level of the Narmada river near the Golden Bridge in Gujarat’s Bharuch district rose to 37 feet — about 9 feet above the danger mark of the Golden Bridge at 7:30 p.m. on sunday Earlier in the day, the water level near Kuldsilla was measured at 15:00. “Yesterday it was 5 feet. Today it’s 35 feet. So the net benefit for the Golden Bridge is 30 feet.

The result is that  many areas  are under water. But the Narmada dam authorities gave us timely forecasts, so we were able to relocate two thousand people and 500 animals from last night,” said Bharuch District Collector Tushar Sumera  while talking to ANI on Sunday afternoon.

“They are  provided with all kinds of facilities and also health services. We are still prepared for a five-meter rise. There were no victims or rescuers,” he said.

The flow of water in the Narmada has increased due to heavy rains in the neighboring state of Madhya Pradesh. In addition, 18,000 cubic meters of water was released from the Sardar Sarovar dam in the Narmada region, officials said.

Bharuch, Ankleshwar City and Kantha and 34 other villages were affected due to excessive water flow. Strict police arrangement has been made in all low-lying areas, they added.

The evacuation operation began in Bharuch late  on Saturday. The main road leading to NH48 through Chhapra Kasia village is closed. Many areas of Chandod, Bharuch, Dahod and Karnal in Vadodara were submerged.
