The Indian women’s cricket team defeated Sri Lanka Women in the final and won the gold medal at the Asian Games. This is India’s second gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China.
India won the toss and decided to bat first. Despite the early loss of Shafal Verma, Smriti Mandhana (46 off 45 balls) and Jemimah Rodrigues (42 off 40 balls) set the tone in the innings. The pair added a crucial 73-run partnership for the second wicket.
India lost in the death overs after Mandhana’s dismissal and added just 16 runs to the total in the last four overs. They scored 116/7 from 20 overs. Sri Lanka’s bowling attack got two wickets from Udeshika Prabodhan, Sugandika Kumar and Inoka Ranaweera. After the break, India’s Titas Sadhu broke the run chase with a double mouse in the first series. Later, he also dismissed captain Chamari Athapaththu and reduced Sri Lanka to 15/3 in five overs.
Hasini Perera and Nilakshi de Silva tried to bring Sri Lanka back into the game with a 36-run run, but they could not keep up with the required pace. Rajeshwari Gayakwad (2/20) broke that partnership and India could comfortably see the game through.
The bowling unit restricted Sri Lanka to 97/8 from 20 overs as India won by 19 runs.
